Things to do with your family during the Holiday season

Around the Christmas Holiday I always get a little anxious about how I can make it a memorable time of the year for the kids without getting behind on bills. I’ve come to learn that children really don’t remember the presents they received on Christmas, but they do remember the love and memories shared with family. I believe that Christmas time is all about family time and being grateful for those great relationships we have with those we love. Here’s a list of local events in the 757 area of Virginia and activities you can do with your family that also create lasting memories!

I’ve listed these activities/local events in chronological order so you won’t miss them!

You can’t go wrong with museums and art for the holidays. Encourage your child’s creative side with a visit to see Christmas lights and characters.

I love to expose the kids to local entrepreneurs and handcrafted items. It’s also cool to incorporate the importance of self-care and self-love while checking out skin care products, candles, etc. This could be a great opportunity to model and show good people skills by encouraging children to ask questions and products, purpose, and the entrepreneurs’ journey in business.

2. Holiday Pop UP – Free Family Event

  • First Annual Holiday Bazaar in Old Towne Portsmouth with over 15 vendors with handcrafted items, candles, clocks, home goods, paintings, authors, skin care products, jewelry, home fragrances, custom tees, hand designed cannabis accessories, personalized holiday ornaments, gift baskets, and more.

Where: The Book Club- Ambyance Fragrances
620 High St, Portsmouth VA

When: Saturday November 26, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. til 5:00 p.m.

What’s better than dressing up and going to see a holiday play as a family? Performing Arts is a constant in our family legacy and it’s a nice outing for imaginary minds.

3. Hurrah For The Holidays

  • A Holiday Theatre play by The Hurrah Players: In a beautiful show like the Radio City Holiday show, get into the Holiday spirit with songs of every season, dancing elves, a holiday kickline and more!!

My mom and grandma always encourages reading in daily activities and fun with the kids. Reading should be done daily and I know we may get side-tracked during the holidays, but this is a great reminder and way to enhance their educational experience.

We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle, the routine, and the expectations that life brings us that we might forget to enjoy the moments. It’s great to unplug and connect with your loved ones during a night of games, food, music, and fun.

5. Game Night at Home with the family
Game Night is a staple in my family. Our favorite game is pokeno; a family friendly game that is suitable for all ages who can play bingo. Enjoy some hot chocolate, Christmas snacks, peanuts, trail mix, pretzels, chex mix, popcorn and create memories with family.
This is a great time for family engagement and a NO CELL PHONE ZONE. We encourage families to fully participate, enjoy the moment, and take pictures! Hey, wear matching PJs while you’re at it. Merry Christmas!
